Preserving the red brick façade at Richardson Mews; a request from the Highgate Society

12th May 2020

Together with our venture partner Genzen, Developland acquired this well-positioned Victorian building back in 2015. The site was formerly home to the Richardsons of Highgate furniture shop for many years and sat directly below the imposing red brick façade that we have carefully retained as part of the development process. Today, this red brick façade facing onto Archway Road forms a key focal point of the development and the building’s historic identity.

During the planning process, the Highgate Society requested that the archetypal red brick façade was kept in place during construction in order to conserve the quality and character of Highgate. The construction team have painstakingly retained and maintained stability of the façade using hefty steel supports, whilst the new part of the development is being built.

The beauty of the red brick façade lies in its original architectural features such as the brick ornamentation, ball top finials, cornices, friezes and decorative ridge tiles. Preserving this architectural elegance remained at the forefront of our design and has since garnered much support from the local residents and neighbours.

Construction is now underway for 25 new-build boutique apartments, including a number of units which are available under the Help to Buy scheme.
